This work was made during a residency at the British School at Athens, January and February 2024. The residency was an opportunity to respond to an established archive. The school is a bit like stepping back into a time when Britishness signified something different to what it does today. There are two distinct parts of the building, the hostel and offices and the library, archive and labs. The main building is very much in the style of a minor manor house, with its kitchen, scullery, dining room with a table that can probably seat 30, the old library which now serves as a social space with windows out to a balcony.
I found the two identities of the building fascinating and it was the ways in which the light hit these different spaces interesting. This made me consider the plane the light falls on and the changes we expect in order to read a photograph which is why I have paired each negative, with the reversed image and by juxtaposition the two images created a third image the seemed to blossom where they met.
The slight delay in the slideshow is intentional.
