Oyster Shell Ghosts

Worcester Birmingham Canal

I was commissioned to take some photographs along a rail route that I knew well in 2018. I was very familiar with this route as it is the fastest between my home and Malvern where my family lived. I had often sat on the train as it chugged past the canal and thought how nice it would be be to follow the route of the canal into Birmingham New Street on regular journeys to see my mother so I was really happy to be awarded the commission. I took several shots along the path, but this building took my eye because of the spiral staircase and the brickwork.

The negative was developed in my bathroom and printed at e5process in 2021. The shell is an ancient one that was mudlarked from the Thames near St Paul’s in 2019. The image was printed in 2021.
