The purpose is to build something fixed in a space usually full of people in motion. I perform repeated actions in the frame’s space. There is an element of risk, that someone could decide to challenge me, but I’m not threatening, I’m just, weird.
I find it more weird that people would cross the street to abuse me when I was younger, that someone spat at me as I cycled another person stopped whatever it was they were doing in order to tell me to go back to bongo bongo land, all in the public space. But when I chose to do something that makes me stand out people politely blink and move on. I think a bit of Icarus in Auden’s poem, everything turning away, disinterested in my grand gesture. It doesn’t matter because until I develop the film, only I can see what I am doing.
The marks are generally made when light is fading or growing in order that the marks are not always obivious in and amongst the other lights ebbing and flowing around.
